The Signs of Wrong Knowledge

1. Now listen to the signs of "wrong knowledge," which are indicative of low character. They are told here so that they may be given up upon the hearing of them.
2. Listen to how one wastes one's life as a human being due to wrong knowledge. I will describe these negative attributes so that they may be easily identified.
3. A person with wrong knowledge does not like to listen to spiritual discourses. He finds them boring and difficult to understand because he has many negative qualities.
4. Such a person is full of passion, anger, arrogance, lust, pride, spitefulness, hatred, rigidity, ego, malice, depression, and doubt.
5. He is full of hopes, affections, wants, imagination, worries, vanity, desires, feelings, envy, ignorance, rivalry, tendencies, discontent, and impatience.
6. He is full of deception and demands. He is overly critical, vicious, a troublemaker, rude, full of pride about his knowledge, disrespectful, quarrelsome, he has evil-minded intentions, and is full of trickery.
7. He is one who is always competing, bothersome, overactive, careless, overly hasty and pushy, and always complaining about all sorts of physical ailments. These are all attributes of wrong knowledge.
8. Because of these negative attributes he appears ugly, weak, indecent, poor, and excessively miserly.
9. He is lazy, gluttonous, weak, harsh, uncaring, and conniving.
10. Such a person is foolish, hot-tempered, stupid, and over talkative. He speaks falsely and is very foul mouthed and abusive.
11. He is not able to understand, and does not listen to others. He does not know and does not learn. He does not do anything, does not see clearly, and does not have any intention of studying.
12. He is ignorant and does not have any confidence in anyone. He harasses others while he is himself full of faults. He has no devotion or appreciation for devotees.
13. Such a person who is full of wrong knowledge is unrepentant while being critical of others. He is always in anguish. He is dangerous, sorrowful, and prone to violence.
14. Being of lowly character, he is a pretender who is sick and engaged in wrongful deeds. He is unscrupulous and revels in tendencies that are contrary to his own best interest.
15. Having a feeble body, he boasts about being athletic. Even though he is hypocritical and lacking moral standards, he advises others about discrimination.
16. He is rowdy and arrogant, or useless and idle, but walks around puffed up with pride. He is a coward that talks of courage.
17. He is junior in status yet proud, overly indulgent in sensual pleasures and destructive, hateful and excessively corrupt.
18. He is proud and shameless, always in financial trouble and wicked-minded. He is prone to falsehood and is lacking in self discipline.
19. He is dirty with diseased mind, deceitful and unobliging. Having many negative attributes he is quick to turn against others.
20. He is of dull intelligence and argumentative. He has many faults himself but is harshly critical of others, and he minutely observes insignificant faults and points them out with irritating abusive words.
21. He makes harsh statements, and speaking loudly he uses crafty words and creates doubts in people's minds. He says things that cause grief for others, and he is cruel, heartless, and evil-minded.
22. He constantly criticizes others and slanderously speaks of other's shortcomings. His speech is mean, immoral and envious. He engages in false and meaningless talk, and he shows disdain towards others.
23. He is crafty, scheming, secretive, devious, evasive in work, hypocritical, hot tempered, and earns wealth from and makes jokes at the expense of others.
24. He is short tempered, ignorant, thoughtless, vicious, problematic, and he goes into fits as if haunted by ghosts.
25. He may be suicidal or violent towards others, and may even be a killer of women, priests, or cows. Such a person might even kill his own parents. Like this, is his downfallen state.
26. His character is lacking good qualities, he is undeserving, illogical, treacherous, a betrayer of friends, ungrateful, and he frequents brothels. People like this are rebellious and boastful.
27. He is always quarrelling and suspicious of others. He is argumentative and always makes a big commotion. He is irreligious and given to vices. He is prone to addiction, and he is domineering.
28. Such a person is mischievous, unsuccessful, shabby, an instigator, a miser who is annoying and selfish. He is possessive, problematic, and never charitable. Such people are shameless and malicious.
29. Such a one is a rascal and a fool who is a coward that interferes. He is deceitful, rebellious, heretical, a thief, and a fraud.
30. One with wrong knowledge is reckless, uncontrollable, and undisciplined. He is an incessant babbler who always makes frivolous comments and falsely accuses others. He is an arrogant liar with a corrupt and wayward intellect.
31. He may even be a killer, a looter, or a gang member. He is a cheat who indulges in hurting people. He is an imposter, an adulterer, and someone who is fascinated by performances of black magic.
32. He is unhesitating, shameless and quarrelsome. He is thick headed, rough and tough, outspoken but illiterate, overly dramatic, overly passionate, and does not get along with anybody.
33. He is impatient, a liar, and misbehaved. Even if he is blind, lame, always coughing, deaf, or asthmatic, he still does not give up his rigidity.
34. He is not knowledgeable, he is without prosperity or good family background, and without any real power or ability. He is unfortunate like a beggar.
35. He is without strength or ability, without any understanding of religious symbols or spiritual initiation, he is lacking in good attributes, and troubled by physical ailments.
36. He is without dexterity, intelligence, or good conduct. He is lacking in thoughtfulness (vichara), right actions, spiritual inclination (sattva), proper discrimination (viveka), and he is always doubting.
37. Those people with wrong knowledge have no devotion or deep feelings. They have no Self-Knowledge or desirelessness. They have no peace or forgiveness, and are petty about everything.
38. One with wrong knowledge does not understand the importance of time, or what is appropriate to the occasion. He does not understand the significance of study or effort. He does not know friendship, and is truly an unfortunate ignorant person.
39. Let this be enough of such talk. Like this are the many faults of the one who holds to many false concepts. Such a person is a storehouse of wrong knowledge. The listeners should now be able recognize these signs.
40. These are the signs of wrong knowledge. Upon hearing their description, one should give them up. Holding on to them due to pride is not in one's own best interest.
