Tortures of the Elemental World

1. Previously, the narration on the attributes of bodily tortures was given. Now, I shall tell about the tortures pertaining to the elemental world.
2. The happiness and sorrow that arises from the contact of living beings with the elemental world and disturbs the mind is called "Worldly Torture."
3. Now a clear explanation of the characteristics of worldly torture will be given. This will help to enable one to fully recognize and understand the three categories of tortures.
4. When the foot gets injured upon stumbling, or a thorn breaks inside the flesh, or the blow from a weapon causes some injuries, or when some object like a pointed stick penetrates the skin, these are known as worldly tortures.
5. When the unexpected contact with plants or herbs gives burning and scratching sensations, or when a bee stings, these are called worldly tortures.
6. When insects such as a fly, a cattle fly, bees, ants, oil ants, or mosquitoes bite, or when a leech sucks the blood, these are worldly tortures.
7. When fleas, or red birds, red ants, bristles of grain, black ants, bugs, worms creating eczema, black bees, or cattle lice bite or irritate the skin these are worldly tortures.
8. When a scorpion stings, or a centipede, or tiger, or wolf, or wild pig, or birds, or an elk bite, these are worldly tortures.
9. When one is bothered by wild cows, buffaloes, bison, bears, elephants, or when someone is maddened by ghosts, these are worldly tortures.
10. When a crocodile carries one away, when one suddenly gets drowned or falls into flowing water, these are worldly tortures.
11. There are many poisonous snakes, many water animals, and many wild animals. They are countless. This is named as worldly torture.
12. Disobedient animals such as horses, oxen, donkeys, dogs, pigs, foxes, and cats are known as worldly tortures.
13. Many different types of animals that make terrible noises and cause severe grief are called worldly tortures.
14. Walls and terraces that fall, cliffs and tunnels that collapse, and trees that break and fall on the body are worldly tortures.
15. When the effects of someone’s curse or black magic are seen, or when someone suddenly becomes mad, these are worldly tortures.
16. When someone provokes, hypnotizes, abuses, or kidnaps another, these are worldly tortures.
17. If someone gives poison, blames another, or puts a noose around your neck, these are worldly tortures.
18. When poisonous plant secretions infect the body, or some nut oil causes an allergic reaction, or one becomes suffocated with smoke, these are worldly tortures.
19. When one's foot steps on a burning coal, or one's hand is crushed under a large stone, or one stumbles and falls while running, these are worldly tortures.
20. When one falls suddenly in a well, tank, a ditch, or from a cliff or river bank, these are worldly tortures.
21. When one falls down from a fort or a tree and screams loudly in pain, these are worldly tortures.
22. When the lips crack from the cold, when the hands, feet and heels get cracked from dryness, or when one gets fungal infections between the fingers or on the nails, these are worldly tortures.
23. When the tongue gets burnt with hot foods while eating, or when the teeth crack and get cavities, these are worldly tortures.
24. In childhood, when one is at the mercy of others, or is harassed and abused, or is deprived of proper food and clothing, these are worldly tortures.
25. When a girl is staying at her in-law's place and is pinched, beaten, or burned with a hot iron, and starts crying out of control, these are worldly tortures.
26. If by mistake an ear gets twisted, or asafetida (a spice) goes into an eye, or if one is constantly harshly berated, these are worldly tortures.
27. If one is beaten by wicked people in many ways, or if one's mother’s home is far away, these are worldly tortures.
28. If someone forcibly pierces one's ears or nose, holds one down and makes tattoos on the body, or if one mistakenly gets burned on a hot iron bar, these are worldly tortures.
29. When one gets kidnapped by enemies, or one gets sold to people of a lower caste, or if one gets into a miserable state and dies, these are worldly tortures.
30. When many diseases arise that are described as bodily torture, but practitioners of exorcisms are brought in to try to cure them, this is a worldly torture.
31. When one is forcibly given terrible medicines to try to cure various ailments, this is a worldly torture.
32. When the juices of bitter plants or herbs, boiled extracts, or powders and pastes are given making one feel uncomfortable, these are worldly tortures.
33. If laxatives are given, or medicine to make one vomit, or a difficult diet regime is observed which causes difficulties, these are worldly tortures.
34. If an incision is made on a wound with a sharp blade to remove infection, or the skin is branded with a with hot iron rod causing great pain, these are worldly tortures.
35. If plant sap or extract from some nut is applied to the skin causing pain, or blood vessels are cut, or leaches are applied to extract blood from the body, these are worldly tortures.
36. There are so many diseases, and even more medicines that are prescribed for them. It is impossible to mention them all. When one is caused pain and sorrow because of medicines, these are worldly tortures.
37. When someone who wards off ghosts is called and uses excessive smoke and gives beatings, these are worldly tortures.
38. When thieves break into someone's house and assault and beat those who live there bringing great pain and suffering, this is worldly torture.
39. When one gets burned with fire causing great pain, or when one suffers the loss of something that causes crying and groaning, these are worldly tortures.
40. When many beautiful temples, stores of jewels, and attractive clothing gets burned, these are worldly tortures.
41. When many things such as grains, various objects, many animals, precious belongings, and even people, are burnt to ashes, these are worldly tortures.
42. When someone deliberately sets one's field on fire and the grains, piles of grass, heaps of husks, and sugarcanes are burned suddenly.
43. And when such a fire brings about great loss, and causes severe sorrow, this is worldly torture.
44. When there are many such fires taking place causing misery and sorrow in the mind, this is called worldly torture.
45. When one forgets, loses, drops, spoils, breaks, or topples over one’s belongings, or misplaces them so they cannot be found anywhere, these are worldly tortures.
46. When a person loses one's position because of corruption, or loses one's pets, or one's sons and daughters cannot be found, these are worldly tortures.
47. When thieves or enemies make a sudden attack and go around looting houses, and taking away the animals, these are worldly tortures.
48. When vandals cut down crops and banana plantations, or put salt in the fields to ruin the crops, or carry out other such crimes, these are worldly tortures.
49. When cheaters, pickpockets, robbers, gold snatchers, hypnotists, looters, thugs or killers attack and raid people's houses.
50. When bags, or parcels are stolen and opened and one's money and jewelry is taken away, or if rats take away many various belongings, these are worldly tortures.
51. When lightning strikes, or there is a hailstorm, or when one gets caught in heavy rain, or is drowned in a big flood, these are worldly tortures.
52. When there are rushing torrents of water with whirlpools and dangerous bends, and waves and ebbs that carry around scorpions and vicious insects and snakes.
53. And if a person gets caught in that, or is trapped under rocks or on an islet, and almost drowns but survives, this is all worldly torture.
54. When the family life is not to one’s satisfaction, or the wife is ugly, harsh, and cruel, or when one's daughters are widows or one's sons are foolish, these are worldly tortures.
55. When one is haunted by ghosts, or the body gets paralyzed, or by the incorrect incantation of some mantra a person goes mad, these are worldly tortures.
56. When some spirit comes in to one's body and causes many troubles, or when Saturn is in an inauspicious place in one's horoscope and creates calamities, these are worldly tortures.
57. When there are hard times according to the position of the planets, stars, and lunar phases, or position of the moon that cause one uneasiness, these are worldly tortures.
58. When one sneezes at the wrong time, or the song of a fortune bird, or a sound of a lizard, or a hoot of an owl, or the song of some other ill-omened bird or crow makes an inauspicious sound and one starts worrying about these things, these are worldly tortures.
59. When a wandering fortune teller predicts some misfortune to come and one worries and gets nightmares, this is worldly torture.
60. When a fox barks, or a dog cries, or when a lizard falls on the body, or other such omens increase one's worrying, these are worldly tortures.
61. If at the time of leaving on a journey bad omens appear in various ways and the mind becomes depressed, these are worldly tortures.
62. If a person is put in a prison and is made to suffer much pain and injury, these are worldly tortures.
63. If a person is given punishment from the court, or is caned, or hit with a stick on the souls of the feet, or thrown from a cliff, these are worldly tortures.
64. If one is tied to a tree and thrashed with sticks, or is beaten by many people in many ways, these are worldly tortures.
65. If one is punished in various ways such as blocking the anus with a plug, or being enclosed in a barrel, or stretched and beaten with bamboo or fists, or being strangled by the neck, or beaten on the knees, these are worldly tortures.
66. If one is abused by being kicked, slapped, having dung thrown on his body, or stones thrown at him, or the ears twisted, or hit in many different ways, these are worldly tortures.
67. If one is hung, pinched, has one's hands tied behind them, or is bent over the trunk of the tree and beaten, or put in a wooden trap and kept guarded, these are worldly tortures.
68. If one has harsh or acidic things inserted into their nose such as lime, or salt, or mustard, these are worldly tortures.
69. If one is immersed again and again in water, or is bound and thrown in front of an elephant, or dragged and beaten like a bull, these are worldly tortures.
70. If one's ears, nose, hands, legs, tongue or lips are forcibly pierced, these are worldly tortures.
71. If one has arrows shot at them, or is put to the gallows, or has one's eyes or testicles removed, or is pierced with nails or needles, these are worldly tortures.
72. If one is harassed and constantly put on the scales, or pushed from a cliff, or tied to the mouth of the cannon and had it fired, these are worldly tortures.
73. If one has wooden blocks hammered in the ears or anus, or has parts of their skin peeled away, these are worldly tortures.
74. If one is skinned from head to toe, or has their skin pierced with fingers, or has a hook put around their neck, or forks put into their testicles, these are worldly tortures.
75. If one is made to drink lead or some other poison, or is cut on the head, or put under the foot of an elephant, these are worldly tortures.
76. If lizards or cats are put in one's clothing, or one is hanged until death, or tortured in many cruel ways, these are worldly tortures.
77. If one is endangered by dogs, tigers, ghosts, crocodiles, or weapons, or lightning, these are worldly tortures.
78. If one has their veins or blood vessels pulled and stretched out, or if one is burned by lit torches, or is affected by any of so many calamities, these are all called worldly tortures.
79. If one suffers the loss of human beings, money, importance, animals, or any objects, these are worldly tortures.
80. If one's mother dies in childhood, or one's wife dies in youth, or one's son dies when one is in old age, these are worldly tortures.
81. If one suffers the sorrow of poverty and debt, or other calamities while in a foreign country, or has difficulties due to bad food, or is otherwise somehow deprived of necessities while abroad, these are worldly tortures.
82. If many die due to a cholera epidemic, or because of defeat in battle, or if death happens to one's friends, these are worldly tortures.
83. If in difficult times, there is famine, or if the mind is doubtful during hard times, or one becomes depressed because of sadness and the poison of worries, these are worldly tortures.
84. If one gets crushed under a crushing machine, or gets caught in the wheels of some vehicle, or falls into fire, these are worldly tortures.
85. If one gets wounded by many weapons, or eaten by wild animals, or put into imprisonment, these are worldly tortures.
86. If one gets suffocated and made uncomfortable with bad smells, or is made to feel ashamed by many insults, or is weakened by many sorrows, these are worldly tortures.
87. Like this, the descriptions could go on endlessly. There are unlimited mountains of sorrow. The listeners should think about and understand the "Worldly Tortures" coming from the elemental world (Adibhootika)
