Description of Desirelessness

1. Listen to the teaching about the desireless person, and the tact, intellect and wisdom with which one will always remain content.
2. My simple speech is like an easy mantra that comes from experience and is sure to bring definite results, like a simple medicine.
3. The sharp listeners should consume the strong medicine of my words. With proper effort all negative qualities disappear, and one immediately acquires the best qualities.
4. First, one is cautioned not to take up the difficult task of becoming desireless as it is not for everyone, but if you do, then it shouldn't be given up. If you do give it up, then it is best not to remain in the company of your acquaintances and those people whom know you.
5. Do not keep your eyes constantly looking at women developing a taste and a liking for them in the mind. If your resolve in this does not remain firm, do not stay in those situations and show your face to those people.
6. Do not stay in one place and be under the pressure of obligations to others. Do not look greedily at another's money or woman.
7. Do not swerve from the path of good conduct. Do not take any money offered to you, and try to ensure that no words of blame come to fall on you.
8. However, do not be ashamed to take alms that are offered, but do not accept more than is needed. Do not disclose your identity immediately when asked.
9. Wear proper and clean clothes, not dirty tattered ones. Do not crave eating sweet food. Do not be obstinate or opinionated, and behave appropriately according to the circumstances of the situation.
10. Do not let the mind pine for indulging in sensual pleasures. Do not be troubled with the body's pains and ailments. Do not hold on to great hopes for the future or the desire to live a long life.
11. Do not allow your detachment from the world wane. Do not allow the strength of your courage to falter. With the strength of the power of discrimination do not allow your Knowledge to become dull or rusty.
12. Do not give up praising God with great feeling. Do not give up continuous internal meditation. Do not break the thread of love for the form of God with attributes.
13. Do not hold on to worries in the mind. Do not consider hard work to be sorrowful or distressing. Do not give up your courage in difficult and trying times.
14. Do not feel disheartened when being disrespected or dishonored. Do not feel injured when being badly insulted. If someone constantly derides you with harsh criticism, do not take it to heart, whatever the case may be.
15. Do not worry about or feel any fear of what other people might think of you. If someone tries to ridicule you, do not feel any shame. When someone tries to offend you, do not get offended, simply remain unconcerned and desireless.
16. Do not leave the path of righteousness, and do not argue with villainous people. Do not associate with lowly and evil-minded people.
17. Do not be hot tempered, and if someone tries to provoke you into a quarrel, do quarrel with them. If someone tries to cause you trouble, do not give up your peaceful state and become disturbed.
18. Do not laugh if you are provoked by vulgar speech. Do not be instigated to speak negatively. Do not harass or torment others from one moment to the next.
19. Do not always wear clothing and adornments of the same style. Move around and do not stay in one place all the time.
20. Do not develop too much intimacy with anyone. Do not delight in taking gifts. Do not sit in meetings longer than necessary.
21. Do not be a slave of physical habits. Do not become reliant on anyone. Do not become stuck in fixed patterns of habit.
22. Do not abandon your daily duties, or your studies and spiritual practice. Do not become dependent on anyone or anything.
23. Do not give up your independence and freedom. Remain without putting any expectations on anyone, and do not become dependent upon others all the time.
24. Do not look at the prosperity of others longing for it. Do not become attached to the pleasure of obtaining possessions. Do not allow the solitude of being alone in your True Form be broken.
25. Do not run around behaving in an uncontrolled manner, and do not be concerned with what other people think about you. Do not become attached to anything at anytime.
26. Do not allow the tradition of your lineage to be broken, and do not allow your connection with it to be lost. Do not leave the path of Knowledge (Jnana) at anytime.
27. Do not give up the path of action, and at the same time do not allow your detachment from action to falter. Do not discontinue spiritual practice or praising God, even for a short time.
28. Do not engage in excessive argument or harbor immoral intentions within. Do not become full of anger or behave improperly.
29. Do not give advice to one who never listens, do not speak about boring things, and do not stay in one place for too long.
30. Do not get involved in too many things, and if you do become involved with something, do not become attached to it and cling to it. Carry out your involvement without becoming entangled in attachments.
31. Do not consider yourself to be superior, and do not be adamant about your importance. Do not desire or expect to be honored from anyone, at any place.
32. Never give up your simplicity or puff yourself up as being great. Do not be attached to any pride about yourself.
33. Do not give advice without proper authority, or force spiritual teaching on anyone whose ears are not open to hear about the spiritual path.
34. Do not give up desirelessness even though it may be hard for you, and do not give up studying diligently. Do not take a harsh stance against anyone.
35. Do not speak harsh words or give difficult tasks to others. Do not give up your patience and encouragement towards others.
36. Do not become attached to anything, and do not speak of doing something without actually doing it. Do not make many demands on disciples for long periods of time.
37. Do not speak arrogantly. Do not constantly be dwelling on the sense organs and their pleasures. Do not get involved with occult powers and take liberties in using them.
38. Do not feel ashamed to do lowly tasks. Do not become intoxicated with riches, and do not get angry because of pride.
39. Do not get puffed up because of some high position or rank. Do not abandon justice and morality, and do not engage in inappropriate behavior.
40. Do not speak without being properly informed or make decisions based upon speculation and imagination. If anyone gives you good advice or criticism, do not foolishly feel hurt or sorrowful.
41. Always remain alert and take a comprehensive view of things. Do not take pleasure in laziness.
42. Do not harbor any doubts in the mind. Do not issue commands out of selfishness, and if some orders must be given, do not give them with selfish intent, placing yourself before others.
43. Do not speak without proper occasion Do not sing the praises of something without having knowledge of it. Do not neglect thoughtfulness by going down the path thoughtlessness.
44. Do not give up helping others, and do not cause harm to others. Do not create doubts in anyone.
45. Do not abandon the understanding that there are things you don't know. Do not move around from place to place giving explanations about God or singing his praises for money.
46. Do not say things that will create doubts. Do not hold on to many firm beliefs. Do not make comments on a book without having the ability to explain what it says.
47. Do not knowingly ask questions with an air of being clever. Do not show pride to anyone by saying that you will give the explanation.
48. Do not have pride in Knowledge. Don’t harass anyone unnecessarily or get into many disagreements with anyone.
49. Do not have any attachment to selfish intellect. Do not get involved in too many activities. Do not become a worker in the political field.
50. Do not become overly obligated to anybody. Do not ask for large amounts of alms or charity. Do not advertise your spiritual lineage for the purpose of acquiring alms.
51. Do not act as a middleman in arranging marriages. Do not become a mediator in disputes. Do not become attached to the responsibilities of being a householder.
52. Do not visit a place where there is a big commotion of family life going on. Do not eat unhealthy food. Do not bring a guest when invited to visit someone or have a meal somewhere.
53. There are many rituals and ceremonies performed at the time of someone's death, and various rituals that are performed on death anniversaries. There are ceremonies to ward off the negative effects of the stars, rituals for peace, rituals to celebrate pregnancy and the naming ceremony, and ceremonies for meals after having fasted for many days. There are special meals offered after the completion of vows, and ceremonies for making spiritual offerings.
54. Being desireless, do not go to such events. Do not eat food from there, or go there and act foolishly.
55. Do not go to wedding ceremonies. Do not go around singing the praises of God and giving explanations asking for money to make your living.
56. Do not give up asking for your own alms, but do not depend upon that and make a schedule for eating food at a particular person's house. A desireless person does not go on a pilgrimage at the cost of others.
57. Do not do good actions or become a priest for the purpose of making money. A desireless person does not accept a reward for doing what is right even if it is offered to him.
58. Do not make a monastery anywhere. Even if it is done, do not cling to it. A desireless person does not become the head of the monastery and take up residence there.
59. Being desireless, do everything without getting entangled in it. Promote the path of devotion with the mutual co-operation of others amongst themselves, with your own involvement barely being noticed.
60. Do not remain in a state of not making any efforts towards any work. Do not even look at laziness. As long as there is body, do not become distanced from spiritual worship.
61. Do not get involved in or attached to the causative and operational activities of the body. Do not leave the path of devotion carelessly or apathetically.
62. Do not get involved in an excessive amount of worldly activity, while at the same time do not give up all activity. Do not give up the devotion to God with attributes, but do not worship God with a false sense of separation.
63. Do not run after things for a long time. Do not stay in one place for many years. Do not do engage in excessive hard work, but do not be fraudulently exempt.
64. Do not talk too much, but do not remain always without talking, as that is of no use. Do not eat too much food, but do not fast too much.
65. Do not sleep too much, yet do not go without enough sleep. Do not cling to too much discipline, but don't be undisciplined.
66. Do not stay in a crowded place with many people, yet do not spend too much time retreating to the forest. Do not pamper your body too much, but conversely do not intentionally kill the body.
67. Do not keep the company of many people, and never give up keeping the company of saints. Performing too many rituals and rites is of no use, but improper behavior is equally wrong.
68. Do not become too famous, yet do not become dependent on other people. Too much love and affection is of no use, but being heartless is no good.
69. Do not harbor many doubts. The path of unbridled liberty is of no use. Do not get into excessive spiritual practices, however, remaining without any spiritual activity at all is not proper.
70. Do not enjoy and cherish sensual pleasures too much, but you can't completely abandon sensory experience. Do not be too attached to the body, yet giving it too much trouble is also not right.
71. Do not become addicted to many types of experience, but to have no experience is not useful. Do not talk too much about your inner experience, but to keep totally silent is also not proper.
72. Do not be continuously fascinated with the activity of the mind, but being totally thoughtless is of no use. Do not try to see Reality, but it is not correct to go without seeing it.
73. Reality is beyond the mind and intellect, but without the intellect, there is only the darkness of ignorance. Forget the sense of individual consciousness that is only false ignorance.
74. Do not hold on to the feeling of being knowledgeable, yet to not have any knowledge is of no use at all. Do not try to conceive of That which inconceivable, but to not try to conceive of it is also not correct.
75. Constant remembrance of lingering memories of the visible world is not useful, but completely forgetting the worldly existence is also not correct. Do not indulge in meaningless discussions, but there must be some discussion.
76. Making divisions in the world is not useful, but inter-mixing the castes is not proper. Do not forget your own own duties and role in life (dharma), but do not take pride in it.
77. Do not speak about having many hopes, and do not act without proper discrimination. Do not allow your peace and contentment to be disturbed in any way.
78. Do not write a book that has many errors, but to not write a book is of no use. Do not make many mistakes when reading, yet to go without reading is no good.
79. Being desireless, do not avoid speaking when necessary, and if anyone raises any objections while you are talking, do not get into an argument. Never ridicule or dishonor a listener.
80. If you consistently abide by this teaching faithfully, you will gain contentment and tranquility, as well as acquire the qualities of a spiritual leader without expecting it.
