Narration About God (Lord Vishnu)

1. Previously the listeners have asked for the narration about the description of God (Hari; Vishnu). The wise are asked to remain attentive while listening.
2. Listen to how the explanations about God should be full of splendor and excellence so that all are showered with Lord Rama’s blessings.
3. If gold were to have a fragrance, or sugar-cane were to bear fruit it would be something extraordinary.
4. Similarly, if a servant of God is desireless, knowledgeable, and a loving devotee who is also a scholar that never engages in argument, this is also extraordinary.
5. If one has knowledge of the musical moods, rhythms, knowledge of all the arts, has the Knowledge of Brahman, and dwells among the people without pride, this is also extraordinary.
6. Such a one has no jealousy, is liked by the virtuous, understands the four facets of the mind, and remains absorbed in inner contemplation.
7. God is present at various birth anniversaries, pilgrimage places, and many auspicious ceremonies in the form of power.
8. How can those unfortunate people who do not honor, respect, or visit pilgrimage places and call them false only because of word knowledge, meet God?
9. If one has a skeptical mind, That which is without attributes is lost, and if one has the Knowledge of Brahman, but loses God with attributes because of pride, there is loss on both the sides.
10. If there is an image of God with form present, and one begins narrating the description of the formless while emphatically denying the presence of God with attributes, such a one is a learned fool.
11. The narration about God should not be given in such a way that the listeners begin doubting both paths. Now, listen to the narration about the description of God.
12. If there is an image of God with attributes, give a narration that is full of devotional feeling. Praise the compassion and mercy of God, sing the names of God in an uplifting way, and describe the glory and greatness of God.
13. By singing the praises of God and giving the explanations about God in a natural way, everyone becomes filled with happiness and divine love.
14. The sign of good explanation is that one does not speak of That which is without attributes while describing God with attributes, and the faults and virtues of others are not spoken of at any time.
15. Describe the glory and greatness of God in various ways. Give the narration about God with attributes with devotional feelings.
16. Do not give up the narration about God because of shyness about what people will think, and do not give explanations out of desire for acquiring money. Taking enjoyment in singing the praises of God, give new and interesting explanations.
17. Remain humble in the forum where explanations about God are being given. Being free of doubt, bow down to God, dance with joy, and sing the names of God clapping your hands.
18. Do not praise one person in front of another, or speak of one deity while in the temple of another. If one gives explanations like this it will be awkward and confusing. Therefore, be clear about what is proper to say at a particular place.
19. If there is no image of God with attributes present, and the listeners that are sitting to hear the discourse are saintly or virtuous people, then the explanation of non-duality should definitely be given.
20. If there is no image of God, nor any virtuous people sitting to listen to the narration, but the audience is comprised of devotional people, then the narration should be about detachment and changing one's worldly ways.
21. If the narration contains explanations about various moods such as courage, devotion, etc., the descriptions of the beauty and attractiveness of women should be avoided.
22. If the beauty of women is described, the listeners become distracted and their minds become attracted to the objects of the senses.
23. Therefore, speaking about that which is distracting to the spiritual aspirant should be avoided. When listening to such descriptions the mind of the aspirant becomes fixated on the meditation about women.
24. If one meditates upon the beauty and charms of women, the mind takes on the image of the woman and becomes desirous of sexual pleasure. How can one meditate on God in such a situation?
25. If one feels happy by hearing the descriptions of the charms and beauty of women, understand that he is considered to have strayed away from God.
26. Even if the listener's interest in God wanes, but there is strength of devotional feelings in the explanations about God, in a moment one's interest can become reestablished by meditating on the Supreme Self, Paramatman.
27. When the mind is absorbed in meditation on God how can one be aware of other people? When one who is free of doubt and hesitation gives explanations about God, the splendor and excellence of the narration becomes great beyond all bounds.
28. One who has the knowledge of musical moods, rhythms, and vocal intonations knows how to give explanations full of meaning in an easily comprehensible manner.
29. There are many languages and many skillful ways to give narrations. One may even have a sweet voice like that of a nightingale, but the path of devotion is quite different from all of this. This is only understood by devotees.
30. Devotees meditate on God alone. They do not know anything other than God, similar to an artist whose mind is filled only with his art.
31. Any art which excludes God cannot be considered good art. Art that excludes God only leads one astray and creates a sense of separation from God.
32. Many various art forms come between oneself and God, like a snake coiled around a sandalwood tree, or a buried treasure that is protected by someone.
33. If one leaves aside God who is the knower of all, and becomes engrossed in musical melodies, this is truly an obstacle to realizing God.
34. When one’s mind becomes engrossed in music, how will one be able to contemplate on God? It is like a thief who forcefully takes a person away and makes him an accepting servant.
35. When it comes to having a glimpse of God, the knowledge of music is a hindrance that holds the attention of the mind as it gets carried away by focusing on notes and melodies.
36. The art holds the attention of the artist similar to when a person goes to meet a king in his court and then is forcibly held there and made to become a servant.
37. One who keeps the mind focused on God while giving narrations about God is truly blessed in this world appearance.
38. For such a one who is interested in the explanations about God, and in whom there is always a liking for God, he becomes united with God.
39. The devotee of God eagerly gives up everything, and leaves laziness and sleep behind to go to the places where the narration about God is taking place.
40. The one who takes up many types of work in the house of a devotee and helps the devotee in every possible way in his devotion,
41. Is called a true servant of God because of his full faith in the name of God. At this point, this sub-chapter is completed.
