Explanation of Illusion

1. Illusion appears and then gets destroyed. Reality has no appearance and never gets destroyed. Illusion is felt to be true, but never becomes true.
2. The destitute person lies idle on his back and imagines many things, but nothing ever comes of it. Illusion is like that.
3. In a dream, the prosperity of wealth, and the enjoyment women and many activities are felt to be true for a moment, but it is all false. The same is true of Illusion.
4. In the sky, the cloud formations take the appearance of many various forms and even look like many glorious cities and towns that change in many ways. Illusion is just like that.
5. A con-artist plays many tricks pretending to be wealthy, and when he speaks of his wealth, it seems to be real, but in actual experience, it is not true. The same is true about Illusion.
6. On a special day of the Hindu calender which is the day of sharing gold, it is customary to take leaves with little thorns from a tree and this is considered to be like looting gold. But it is all not true, just like Illusion.
7. People observe grand ceremonies on the death anniversaries of a dead person, or adorn a woman who will burn herself on her husband's funeral pyre, and they all go and cry at the cremation grounds. Illusion is like this.
8. A prostitute, a string tied around a pregnant woman for the safety of the baby, and a name given to someone are all called Laxmi, but this is all false like the nature of Illusion.
9. A girl who becomes a widow in her childhood is given a name meaning "eternal spouse" and someone who begs from house to house is named after the God of Wealth, but this is all false, the same as Illusion.
10. An actor plays the ten incarnations of Lord Krishna in a drama, but is a beggar in real life, and a dry river is given a name meaning "full of water." Illusion is like this.
11. A fraud plays the part of a king in front of the villagers and carries himself with the expressions of a great king, but it is all false. Illusion is the same as this.
12. In the house there is an idol of the Goddess of Abundant Food, but there is no food in the house. A woman is named after Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning, but she does not learn anything, and only prepares cowdung cakes55. Illusion is like this.
13. A dog is named Tiger, a son is named Indra (King of the Gods), and an ugly woman is said to be beautiful. Illusion is the same as this.
14. A fool is called a master of the arts, a donkey brays and it is called a nightingale’s song, or a blind woman is said to have good vision. Illusion is like this.
15. A person born into a low caste is given the name of a holy plant. A woman shoemaker is named after the holy city of Kashi, and a lowly untouchable woman is given the name of the holy river Ganges. Illusion is like this.
16. If the shadow becomes merged into the darkness, it is imagined that there is something there. Illusion is the same as this.
17. When one's earlobes, fingers, joints, or palms are held up to the light, they give off the appearance of being red in color. This is just like Illusion.
18. When seeing an orange robe it looks to the mind like a burning fire, but upon investigation it is seen to be untrue, just like Illusion.
19. If we put our feet in water they appear to be distorted and short, long, thin, crooked, etc. What is seen in the water is false. Illusion deceives in the same way.
20. When someone is having a seizure, the earth looks like it is crumbling down. Someone who is jaundiced appears to be yellow, and someone with a high fever experiences hallucinations. Illusion is the same as this.
21. When there is some change in an object, it appears to be something else, but it is always only the same object that has simply undergone some kind of change. This is the same for Illusion.
