The Signs of Wisdom

1. Bodies are made of bone and flesh, and in them resides the living God that experiences many changes, and who is the knower of those changes.
2. He is the knower of what is solid and what is hollow in life, and who understands what should be taken and what should not be taken.
3. Some people ask repeatedly to receive certain things, while others give without asking for anything. Each person must recognize what is virtuous for oneself, in one's own experience.
4. Pour your life into the life of others, merge yourself with the Self in others, and try again and again to discover the inner core of the minds of others.
5. For example, if the "sacred thread" is loosely braided, the threads that it is comprised of get all tangled up, but if it is braided correctly, it retains its proper appearance.
6. Similarly, one's mind is joined and intermingled tightly with the mind of another with the help of the power of discrimination. If this tight intermingling is not there, imagination and speculation run rampant.
7. Imagination and speculation only generate more imagination and speculation, and because of hesitation, the success of one's work gets derailed. For this reason, one must first see clearly and gain direct experience.
8. If one does not understand what is going on for others, it is difficult to know their minds. If this is the case, how can one expect to win over the hearts and minds of others?
9. People try to win over the minds of others without a clear comprehension of what is going on for them. Trying to win over the minds of others with an incomplete knowledge of their situation, their attempts only fall short at every step.
10. The Lord of the Universe is the Inner-Self of all, so what is the case for using some deceptive means of persuasion on anyone? One who gives explanations with the support of the power of discrimination is truly the most excellent person.
11. Such an excellent person completes his tasks with superior quality. Those who act deceitfully perform an inferior type of work. According to one’s actions, living beings either bring ruin upon themselves or bring about their own welfare.
12. A noble person treads on the path of virtue, while deceitful people tread on the path of deception. The ignorant person foolishly gets cheated by his petty concern for small gains.
13. The fool thinks that he is wise, but he is really a pitiful fool. Only one who is wise understands the signs of wisdom.
14. Only the one who becomes consciously merged with the Universal Self becomes that Universal Self. What can be lacking then for him, either in worldly life or in spiritual life?
15. The intellect is a gift from God. What is a human being without the intellect? He is like a king who has abandoned his kingdom and roams about begging for alms like a pauper.
16. People generally like the life and environment that they create for themselves and because of their pride for these things, they become entangled in Illusion. This can be seen everywhere.
17. Everyone thinks, "We are great, we are beautiful, we are the smartest people on earth."
18. When one thinks this over, it is clear that nobody thinks of oneself as being insignificant or inferior. Those who are knowledgeable understand that everyone everywhere thinks like this.
19. Because of pride about oneself, people live their lives imagining themselves to be special. This must be seen using proper discernment.
20. To take pride in what is untrue, and to give up what is True is the sign of foolishness.
21. Understand that pride in the True is not pride in the untrue, and that justice and injustice can never be the same.
22. Justice means That which is eternal, and injustice means that which is ephemeral. Similarly, how can being disciplined and being undisciplined be the same?
23. Some people enjoy their good fortune openly, while thieves run away. The greatness of some is plainly evident, while the greatness of others is difficult to see.
24. Actions that are done immorally and thoughtlessly cause many troubles. Therefore, seek out those who are wise and intelligent.
25. One meets many crafty people in the world, but the wise know how to handle such people. The tricks and deception of such people do not work on a wise person.
26. For this reason, one should make friends with prominent people who exhibit leadership qualities. With their support it is possible to manage others and have influence among many common people.
27. Those who are wise are liked by others who are wise. Wisdom is appreciated by the wise while fools carry on without accomplishing anything.
28. Wisdom is understood by the wise, and in that wisdom there is a meeting of the minds. However, it is best if their activities are carried out discretely.
29. When you win over the mind of a powerful person, many common people as well as virtuous people will seek you out for advice.
30. Through acquaintances meet new people. With your intellect enlighten the intellect of others. With justice and morality overcome the resistance of non-believers.
31. Dress in a simple and ordinary fashion, but inwardly maintain and develop many good skills and qualities. Be careful not to break the affection that others feel towards you.
32. One who is desireless, having an attitude that is always new and fresh, who has the Knowledge of Brahman and who is recognized and known to be a virtuous man, is very rare in this world.
33. Such a person knows many subjects by heart, and can easily pacify the minds of all. After staying somewhere for a short time, he does not remain only in one place and moves on.
34. If such a person only stays in one place, his undertakings become negatively affected. Therefore, he meets with many people and tends to the needs of all those whom he comes into contact with.
35. People remember such a person and want to meet with him again and again. These are the signs of wisdom and of the best qualities in a person, with which human beings become content.
