The Body and the Self

1. The Self resides in the body, and through it endures many joys and sorrows. In the end, it gives up the body and leaves suddenly.
2. In youth there is a lot of energy in the body and living beings enjoy many pleasures. In old age the body becomes weak and experiences a great deal of suffering.
3. Everyone feels that they would not like to die, but in old age the hands and feet become crippled and one feels like giving up on life and its many miseries.
4. Due to the association of the Self with the body, it experiences some happiness in life, but when death nears, it cries out in pain.
5. It is with this connection that the Self experiences suffering. Some people even kill others, but in the end, there is nothing left and the whole life has been lived in vain.
6. Such is the delusion that passes like two days, yet people call it Parabrahman, the Absolute Reality. They accept the many sorrows of life, and in confusion assume that it is all real.
7. In this way, all people become miserable and pass away lamenting with pain without having any satisfaction in life. Some small pleasures are enjoyed, but they are immediately followed by sorrow.
8. If you try to remember all of the suffering experienced since birth, you will see how much suffering there has been. There has been so much grief that it cannot be measured.
9. Such is the association of the Self with the body. Like this, there is an accumulation of many miseries, and the living beings, having become miserable, pass away alone.
10. All beings experience some happiness and some sorrow throughout their lives because of the connection with the body. There are many things that oppose the mind and many separations that are experienced.
11. At the time of sleep there are insects and fleas that cause discomfort in many ways, and if some chemicals are used as a remedy to get rid of them, they also cause some irritation.
12. Flies come around at mealtime, and rats and mice take away anything edible, and then cats bring trouble to those rodents.
13. There are many insects like lice, gnats, horseflies, and snakes that cause aggravation to each other, and are harassed by humans as well.
14. There are scorpions, serpents, tigers, bears, alligators, and wolves that kill humans beings, as well as human beings that are killing each another. There is not even one living being that is completely happy and content in life.
15. The 8.4 million various species in creation all devour one another. How many afflictions and ailments should be described?
16. Such is the activity of the Inner-Self. There are many living beings crowded on earth that are constantly killing each other.
17. They continuously cry, get aggravated, moan with pain, and give up their lives. Only foolish people call this Parabrahman.
18. Parabrahman never disappears and never causes sorrow for anyone. Neither praise nor criticism exist in Parabrahman.
19. If someone is abusive, all of that abuse is received by the Inner-Self alone. Through investigation, this can be experienced for oneself.
20. There is so much abusive language that is used in many ways. People call others such things as the son of an ass, the son of a prostitute, the son of a slave, the son of a bitch, the son of a rascal, the son of a dirty woman, etc. How many such abuses should be told?
21. All of this abuse does not touch Parabrahman. Even imagination does not function there. There is no knowledge of any separation of anyone in Parabrahman.
22. There are so many living beings in creation that it is not possible for all to experience greatness. Therefore God has given to each according to what is appropriate for that being.
23. There are many people that go to the market place, and they buy whatever goods are available there. Only the fortunate ones can take the best items.
24. The same thing that applies to the food and clothing that one gets also applies to the worship of God. The fortunate and wise gain the Knowledge of Brahman.
25. All people get some happiness from family life, but the common person's happiness of worldly life cannot be compared to the great pleasures that the king enjoys. How can an unfortunate person experience the same grandeur as a king?
26. However, everyone experiences many miseries in life, and in the end, at the time of death, everyone is basically in the same situation. All have enjoyed many pleasures in the past, and no one can avoid the inevitable sorrows at the time of death.
27. The hardships of sorrow cannot be tolerated, yet the breath does not leave the body. The unbearable sufferings upon the approach of death are the same for everyone.
28. Many lose various limbs and body parts and have to live in such a state. Living beings suffer in this way at the end of their lifetimes and then pass away.
29. The beauty of the form disappears and the physical strength leaves the body. Living beings suffer miserably in pain and die alone in the end.
30. The last days of life are miserable and pitiable for everyone. Such are the painful state of affairs at the time of death, which are very sorrowful.
31. People say that they enjoy life, but that they are not the enjoyer. Such talk is ridiculous. People say such things without proper consideration and clear seeing.
32. The last days of life at the time of death are truly very difficult. The life force does not leave the body easily, and at the end men become like beggars.
