The Attributes of the Dispassionate One

1. Listen now to the best qualities of the dispassionate one so that you may become detached from everything and live with the power of the yogi (one who lives in conscious union with the Supreme Self) within.
2. With detachment good fame increases, and the dispassionate gain fulfillment and importance.
3. By detachment, the Supreme Meaning (Paramartha) is gained, and bliss (ananda) grows. Dispassion increases greatly with discrimination (viveka).
4. With dispassion, happiness overflows, true knowledge (sadvidya) prevails, and good fortune is strengthened with liberation.
5. With dispassion, one's purpose is complete, one is finished with desire, and the "Goddess of Speech" (Saraswati) resides in one's mouth, speaking sweet words.
6. Listen to these attributes of dispassion. Hold strongly to them in life and you will become well-known in the world.
7. With dispassion and discrimination be detached and spread spiritual science. With dispassion and courage exercise control over sensual indulgences.
8. The dispassionate one maintains spiritual practice (sadhana), sings God's praises (in bhajans and kirtan), and reveals the special knowledge of Brahman.
9. The dispassionate one increases devotion, exhibits peace, and puts forth effort in detachment.
10. The dispassionate one gives prestige to good activities, spreads the spirit of non-involvement in objectivity, and remains strong in the absence of hopes and expectations in life.
11. The dispassionate one establishes virtue, follows good moral behavior, and upholds forgiveness with respect.
12. The dispassionate one glorifies the Supreme Truth, understands through inquiry, and keeps to the good path of the quality of purity (sattva guna).
13. The dispassionate one takes care of the faithful, shows them the satisfaction of divine love, and does not shun simple people who seek refuge.
14. The dispassionate one is supremely alert, utilizes inner observation, and stands up for Supreme Truth.
15. The dispassionate one continues studying, is hard working and industrious, and with his excellent speaking skills is able to uphold Paramartha where it is lacking.
16. The dispassionate one speaks of true knowledge, and praises detachment. With firm conviction he gives satisfaction with his speech.
17. The dispassionate one holds religious celebrations on a large scale, organizes groups of devotees, and in different ways glorifies the path of worship.
18. The dispassionate one sings songs of God, gives many discourses, and with the path of devotion he humbles critics and hateful people.
19. The dispassionate one helps many people, revives goodness, and expands the path of virtue with strength.
20. The dispassionate one performs rituals, does repetition of mantra, meditates, goes on pilgrimages, and sings the praises of God with reverence and a clear mind.
21. The dispassionate one is firm in his resolve, leads a happy life, and uplifts the people of the world by his association with them.
22. The dispassionate one is courageous, generous, and always ready to provide explanations.
23. The dispassionate one is alert, follows the correct path, is of service to others, and is glorified in leaving a lasting legacy.
24. The dispassionate one seeks out others who are dispassionate, identifies other sages, and makes friends with saints and yogis.
25. The dispassionate one understands the use of mantras, and visits different pilgrimage places, as well as other beautiful places.
26. The dispassionate one performs many different kinds of tasks while inwardly maintaining a disinterested attitude, and he does not hold to any hopes or desires for anything.
27. The dispassionate one is true to himself, is not corrupt in is his activities, and does not assume an inferior status by being overly dependant upon someone else.
28. The dispassionate one properly understands the significance of time and various situations, and is intelligent in all ways.
29. The dispassionate one is not overly biased in one way of thinking and studies many things. He understands things as they are.
30. The dispassionate one knows the stories of God and their meanings, and understands the significance of singing the praises of the Knowledge of Brahman. He has a good understanding of the body, and good knowledge of philosophy. He truly has a good knowledge of everything.
31. The dispassionate one understands the path of action, the path of worship, the path of knowledge, the path of the investigation of truth, as well as the paths of being engaged in worldly activity and the renunciation of worldly activity.
32. The dispassionate one understands the characteristics of the states of love, depression, balance, meditation, bodilessness, and the natural state of one’s own being.
33. The dispassionate one understands the nature of the attributes of sound, hand gestures (mudras), body postures (asanas), words and diagrams used in meditation practices (mantras and yantras), and various religious procedures and assertions. He knows about all of them and gives them up.
34. The dispassionate one is friendly with everyone, truly marvelous, and has many diverse qualities.
35. The dispassionate one is detached, a devotee of God, free from the sense of individuality, and untainted by involvement in activity.
36. The dispassionate one studies many types knowledge in depth, challenges various opinions, and guides aspirants to the correct path.
37. The dispassionate one speaks about the correct path, removes doubts, and treats all of mankind as his own.
38. The dispassionate one respects his critics, gives explanations to aspirants, and motivates the ignorant with explanations about the desire for liberation.
39. The dispassionate one adopts the best qualities, abandons undesirable qualities, and overcomes obstacles by utilizing the power of discrimination.
40. Like this are the best signs of the dispassionate one. Listen to them with concentration of mind. The dispassionate one does not look on them with indifference.
41. All of this has been said naturally. Accept whatever is agreeable in it. The listeners should not become disinterested because so many things have been said.
42. If instead of accepting these good attributes after hearing them, one adopts negative attributes and does what is inappropriate, he becomes a learned fool.
43. The signs of the learned fool are explained in next sub-chapter. The listener is asked to listen attentively to what is said next.
