Miseries of Life - Assessment of the Self (1)

1. The second marriage took place and the man forgot about the sorrow of the past. He remained in the family life, thinking to himself that he was happy.
2. He became very miserly and did not even take enough food to fill his own stomach. He was even ready to give up his life for the sake of money.
3. Even in the most difficult times he would not spend any money. Whatever he accumulated, he just kept adding to it. How can it be possible for him to have good desire within?
4. He did not give out anything in charity, and he would prohibit anyone else from giving. He was always criticizing saintly people.
5. He does not know anything about visiting holy places or engaging in spiritual activity, and he does not welcome any special guests or visitors. He even picks up and accumulates small pieces of grain from the mouths of ants.
6. He does not do any good deeds himself, and cannot stand to see anybody else doing them. He ridicules such people in his mind because he does not find that kind of activity appealing.
7. He harasses devotees of God. With bodily force he hurts others, and with harsh words he causes pain in the minds of living beings.
8. Having already given up moral conduct he behaves immorally, all the while puffed up with pride.
9. He slanders his ancestors, does not observe any customary rituals after their death, and somehow even disregards his family's accepted deity.
10. Disregarding tradition, he gives an invitation to his sister and brother-in-law in order to avoid having to give anything to outsiders.15
11. He never likes to listen to narrations about God, and says that God is not required at all. He also speaks out against daily prayers, saying they are unnecessary.
12. He greedily accumulates money and betrays others. He becomes intoxicated with uncontrolled arrogance in his youth.
13. With his body still filled with youth, he can not take control and hold back his enthusiasm, so he commits a grave misdeed that one should not do.
14. He was married to a woman who had not yet come of age, and due to his lack of patience, he gives in to lust and makes the acquaintance of another woman.
15. In this way, he does not show respect to his sister or mother and he commits adultery with the other woman. Even when punished at the king’s court, he still does not change his ways.
16. On seeing the other woman, lust for her arose within him. Because he was unable to control himself, he once again became miserable.
17. In this way, he committed plenty of misdeeds, and had no sense of what was right and wrong. As a result of his reckless behavior, he suddenly began to experience disease in his body.
18. His body became filled with all sorts of diseases. He contracted tuberculosis and immediately began suffering because of his misdeeds.
19. Filled with diseases, his whole body came to have ruptures, and his nose became flat. His pleasing attributes disappeared and he became filled with unpleasant qualities.
20. His body became weak, and many ailments arose. His youthful energy was gone, and he became emaciated.
21. His body came to be in a miserable state. He experienced pain all over, and lacking energy, his body began to tremble and shake.
22. His limbs began to deteriorate, and his entire body became infected with worms. Young and old alike began spitting at him upon seeing him.
23. He had dysentery and the foul smell of his own feces was all around. He became very emaciated, and his sorrowful life would not leave him.
24. He cried, "Oh God! Give me death now! I have experienced so much suffering. Is the stock of my misdeeds not yet finished?"
25. He cries incessantly in his sorrow. Every time he looked at his body, he felt more and more miserable. His body had become pitiable, and he was suffering greatly.
26. Like this, great suffering was experienced. His life was in ruins, and then thieves came into his house and robbed him of all of his money.
27. He had neither worldly life nor spiritual life. His destiny was so terrible that he even consumed his own urine and feces in utter misery.
28. Eventually, the accumulations of his misdeeds was exhausted. Day by day, his suffering became less as the treatments and medicines that the doctor gave him began to take effect.
29. He almost died, but he was saved. It was as if he had been born again. People commented about how he had come back into society.
30. He was reunited with his wife once again, and he put his household back in order. And once again, he became very selfish like before.
31. He worked to obtain and accumulate some wealth once more, but the household was on the verge of collapse because there was no child.
32. Not having a son, he was very unhappy and people labeled him as childless. So he wished that he might at least have a daughter.
33. Many efforts were made to have a child. He made vows to many different gods, went on pilgrimages, undertook many types of worship, and went on fasts. He participated in many ceremonies, and prepared various religious meals.
34. He was not happy sexually because being childless filled him with sorrow. Then, it so happened that the family deity blessed him with a child.
35. The couple had extreme love for the child. Neither one of them would leave the child for even a single moment. If anything ever happened to the child, they would cry loudly.
36. In this way they were saddened, so they were worshipping many deities. Then, suddenly the child died, as a result of past deeds.
37. Because of the child's death, they were greatly saddened. Becoming without child in the household, they asked, "Why has God kept us childless?"
38. "What is the use of money? Let it all go. We must have a child even if we have to give up everything."
39. The label of being childless was gone, but now the label of being a family whose children die was put on them. They could not get rid of this label by any means, and because of this they cried aloud with grief.
40. "Why has our family tree been cut off? The means to continue our family has been destroyed. Our family deity has put out the light of the heir of our family."
41. Now, if we can have a child, then I will even walk over burning coals with joy, or pierce my body with hooks in front of the family deity.
42. Oh, Goddess Mother, I shall do a form of offering to you, or give the child some terrible name, or even put a bridle in my nose. Please fulfill our wish."
43. They made vows to many gods, sought out many ascetics, and even swallowed scorpions.
44. The tried using mediums and spirits and offered coconuts, bananas, mangoes, and clothes to priests.
45. They performed many types of strange things in order to fulfill their desire for a son, but it was not to be their destiny. They did not get a son.
46. They tried things like bathing under trees, thereby scorching even the roots of fruit bearing trees. They committed many misdeeds out of their greed for a son.
47. Giving up all of their wealth, there was great anxiety in their life. Then, God and their family deity blessed them with a child.
48. Now their longing had been fulfilled and the couple rejoiced. The listeners should continue to remain alert, and give your attention to what follows.
