Explanation of Intelligence

1. The actions of the one who is living a life of spirituality and who utilizes the power of discrimination are respected by the world. With thoughtfulness and careful consideration, he avoids making many mistakes.
2. Such a person does not harbor the doubts that are felt by most people. With forethought, he carefully analyzes situations thoroughly and acts accordingly.
3. When a person is not free of selfish desires and motives, the things that he says are not acceptable to others. It is very difficult to keep the people of the world pleased.
4. Some people try to force their teachings on others, and some enlist the help of others to propagate their teachings. It is only natural that such people gradually experience a downfall because of their greed.
5. If someone tries to give such people teachings about discrimination, he is met with great opposition. The result of his good intentions is that those people become his enemies and the whole affair is a disaster.
6. Sometimes a person tries to give advice to his brother but is only ridiculed. Therefore, it is not wise to try to teach or exhibit qualities of spiritual leadership among family or mere acquaintances.
7. Initially there may appear to be some agreement, but soon the relationship starts to fall apart. The discerning person is careful to avoid this kind of situation when there is a gathering of people lacking discernment.
8. It is also not wise for a husband to become a disciple of his wife. The lack of careful consideration and discernment with regard to this type of situation will tend to lead to a disregard for propriety.
9. Such teachers do not speak of discrimination. Instead they conceal many things, and do not reveal the truth to people. Such teachers do not offer the principle determinations or any firm conclusions to seekers.
10. Such people get carried away by various whimsical ideas and do not exercise any discernment. Such people give no forethought to anything, and are definitely not sages.
11. A good teacher does not ask for anything from anyone. He enhances the spreading of devotion to God by instilling the power of discrimination in people.
12. To win over and please the hearts and minds of others, and to reveal the power of discrimination to many people is very difficult. All of the people in the world live according to their own desires and their own customs.
13. If a person of low caliber becomes a fake guru and takes on many lowly people as disciples, the whole group becomes spoiled due to ignorance and lack of virtue.
14. However, when a group of real knowers of Brahman comes together, many worthy devotees gather around them. Therefore, seek out the company of the saintly people on the earth.
15. Accept what is noble and grand, and give up those things that are insubstantial and useless in life. Through desirelessness become great on the earth.
16. Writing, reading, giving clear explanations, singing and dancing in joy, and learning many things by heart are worthwhile activities in life.
17. Initiation into Knowledge (Jnana), friendliness, sharp intellect, and maintaining good relations with others are good qualities. A person with such qualities knows how to be engaged in many activities while remaining detached.
18. Such a person is always interested in hearing explanations about God, and delights in inspiring people to chant the name of God. His explanations are clear and he is brilliant like the sun.
19. He knows how to please evil-minded people and pacify the virtuous. He knows how to reach the minds of everyone according to their disposition.
20. People change in his company and the best qualities arise in them by coming into contact with him. By being in his company, many people are inspired to study spiritual texts.
21. Wherever he goes he brings a freshness with him and he is appreciated by the people that gather around him. However, he never allows himself to become entangled in greed.
22. His devotion, knowledge, wisdom, and praising of God is intense. He is established in union with God, and engages in great undertakings everywhere he goes.
23. For the one who remains desirelessness, his greatness extends in all directions. People everywhere are pacified by his devotion.
24. Without some kind of effort, no greatness can be achieved. Nothing is achieved by unnecessarily wandering around aimlessly.
25. There is no guarantee of when the life of the body will end. Who knows what kinds of situations in which one may find oneself?
26. Therefore be alert. Do as much work as you can to fill the world with praise for God’s greatness and glory.
27. Whatever can easily be accomplished should be done immediately, and understand clearly through proper discernment what cannot be accomplished.
28. There is nothing that cannot be understood through proper discernment. By utilizing the power of discrimination in solitude one is able to come up with good conclusions.
29. When one is thoughtful and carefully considers situations, one is able to find solutions to many problems. What can be lacking for such a person? How can living beings acquire intelligence without taking the time to reflect in solitude?
30. Utilize the power of discrimination in solitude, and recognize the Inner-Self that is Lord Rama. In this way, you will not become confused from the beginning to the end in any situation.
