Discourse on Giving Explanations

1. In the previous sub-chapter, emphasis was put on the art of writing. Now, listen to the explanation about how to give different interpretations that are appropriate to various conversations so that the listeners can understand correctly
2. Understand that there are many different words, differences in their meanings, many types of expressions, various forms of composition, and different connotations of various words.
3. There are many doubts, many replies and counter-replies, many varied experiences, and many different ways of seeing things that people find amazing.
4. There are many preliminary propositions and final conclusions that need to be verified through experience. Do not speak in a manner which is not methodical or is disorganized, and do not make speculations based on imagination.
5. Do not make contradictory statements about focusing outward or turning the attention inward. If something is not verifiable it should be considered as merely delusional talk. Just like rubbish that is thrown in a ditch cannot be lit, the flame of knowledge cannot be kindled by conjecture and guesswork.
6. The main sign of wisdom is that one answers a question only after understanding the mind of the questioner, and the motivation behind the question being asked.
7. If any activity is undertaken without using proper discernment, one's accumulated knowledge is worthless. How can anyone gain satisfaction by only arguing with others in a gathering?
8. Where there is a lot of talking going on, simply listen and keep silent. Come to understand the minds of others by noticing little indications.
9. Don’t sit around with the foolish people, don't quarrel with people who are arrogant, and don’t disturb other people’s contentment simply for the sake of your own selfish motives.
10. Don’t give up the appearance of being ignorant in some matters, and don't act arrogantly, all puffed up with knowledge. Open up the hearts and minds of many people with soft words.
11. It is important to understand situations correctly. If you continue to argue with people too long, you can spoil the whole occasion even though what you say may be true.
12. Don’t be lazy when investigating something, and don’t sit around with corrupt and degraded people. If you do happen to sit with them, don’t point out their faults and false statements.
13. Find out the mental state of the one who is in sorrow. In such a situation, read something to him. By easing people's minds like this, they will be attracted to you.
14. Don’t take a prominent seat at a meeting, and don’t simply go to a meeting because meals are being served. Going to meetings only to fill your belly is not dignified behavior.
15. Exhibit your best qualities so that when you speak, people will value what you say. Seek out good people and become friends with them.
16. Speak in accordance with your study and practice. Try to please all of the people, and maintain good relations with everyone.
17. When going to a new place, try to find out the conditions there before arriving. Speak to all living beings in a loving and affectionate manner.
18. Speak in order to pacify everyone’s heart without making distinctions that some are superior and some are inferior. Try not to go to strange places unnecessarily after sunset.
19. If one wants to be friendly with everyone in the world, the secret is in the way you speak to people. If you search, you will eventually find some good people.
20. Go to places where explanations about God are taking place. Sit at a distance in a humble manner, and take in the essence of what is being said.
21. There you will come across good people, and you will come to know who is open-minded. In this way, you can slowly and gradually know the people in the crowd.
22. Among all the practices, listening is the most important. More important than listening is reflection. Through reflection many people become content.
23. Very shrewdly and wisely come to understand what is within the minds of others. Without understanding the minds of others, what is the point in tiring yourself out for no reason?
