The Importance of the Body

1. There are many images of God. Some are made of clay, stone, gold, silver, brass, or copper, and some are painted images.
2. There are images of God that are made from various types of wood, coral, precious stones, pearls, stones from rivers, etc.
3. Some people worship images of God on copper coins, gold coins, and stones with markings on them that are brought from various places of pilgrimage.
4. There are so many different varieties of worship, how many should be told? People are attracted to the type of worship according to what they like.
5. However, one should see the root cause of all worship, which is the Inner-Self, and remember Him. Remember the Self and know that all of the many deities that are seen in the world are but a fraction of Him.
6. At the root, there is the one God that has become many, and it is He who is the seer of all. When this point is comprehended and one begins to see with discrimination, this is the beginning of understanding.
7. Without the body, devotion is not possible, and without the body, one cannot realize God. Thus, the body is the origin of devotion to God.
8. If the care for the body is totally neglected, where is the place for devotion to God? Therefore, the capacity to worship God lies in the connection of the body with the Self.
9. How can one praise or worship God without the body? Without the body, how can one rejoice in God or celebrate his glory?
10. Without the body, how would it be possible to utilize various articles of worship such as perfumes, sandalwood, flowers, fruits, incense, lamps, and various other things?
11. How could there be any appreciation of sacred water, the application of sandalwood paste, the offering of flowers, or the repetition of mantras, without the body?
12. What would be possible without the body? Devotion and worship of God are possible only because of the body.
13. God and the various deities have some basic power that is associated with them. Respect and have reverence for the different gods according to their power.
14. Even if many different gods are praised, ultimately that praise is received by the one Original Existence. Therefore, the various gods should all be respected.
15. The vine of Illusion has proliferated extensively bearing the fruit of many bodies. It is through these fruits in the form of bodies that is possible to realize the Original Existence.
16. Therefore one should not neglect the body. Recognize that it is only with the body that one can realize God and become content in life.
17. Many human beings give up their family life and wander around searching for God. However, wherever they go, they only end up becoming entangled in imagination and doubt.
18. Seeing the many different customs of people at various places, they make various offerings to God and see images of God that are located at places of pilgrimage.
19. Or, they listen to many stories about incarnations of God and hold on to beliefs that come from those stories. But all of those incarnations appeared in ancient times and then disappeared.
20. When people hear about Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva they say that they are especially great gods. However, it is the one Lord of the Universe (Jagadisha) that is without attributes which must be recognized.
21. There is no one place where the one God resides, so where is it that He should be worshipped? When one begins to think about this concept one begins to get carried away by speculation and imagination.
22. Thus, the question arises, "Without having a glimpse of God that is without attributes, how can one realize Him?" Blessed are the sages who understand this.
23. There are many gods in the world, and it is not possible to disregard their power. Because of this, the one main God is not easily known.
24. If one gives up the sense of individual doership, then the one God can be seen. Only then can something can be understood about his secret and mysterious existence.
25. The one God cannot be seen or perceived, and does not get destroyed even at the time of the final destruction of the universe. If one does not have any virtue, how can there be any faith in his existence?
26. The mind conceives and imagines many things, and it is always preoccupied with many desires and habits. They are like continuous waves that arise and subside in the mind.
27. Therefore, understand that only "That" which is without any imagination is alone the eternal Reality. There is no end to it, therefore it is called limitless.
28. See this with the eyes of Knowledge and become That after you have seen. With constant contemplation and verification, one becomes one with That, free of any attachment.
29. The amazing acts and the play of God cannot be understood by ignorant beings. Its only by keeping the company of saints that one gains the experience of the Self, and comes to realize it for oneself.
30. This is the means for realizing the subtle state of the Self. Understanding this allows one to avoid downfall in life. By the grace of the Sadguru, one becomes liberated from worldly bondage in no time.
